Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Compiler

Jingeng Sha (coordinator) Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981. The naming section is located at Ahe in the Kuqa County, Xinjiang. Lowermost formation in Kelasu Gr.

Synonym: (阿合组), Arhe Fm (spelling).


Lithology and Thickness

Ahe Formation consists of the coarse clastic rock layers composed essentially of grey-green pebbly sandstone, or the grey-white and grey sandstone and pebbly sandstone, intercalated with conglomerate. It is 300-500 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Tarichick Fm (Taliqik Fm; of Xiaoquangou Gr) of upper Triassic.

Upper contact

It is in a conformable contact with the overlying Yangxia Fm of middle Jurassic.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed largely in the areas of Kucha and Baicheng on the southern pediment of Tianshan Mts, with a good exposure of it being found in the areas of the Kucha River, Jeleweicheck River and Karasu River at Heiying Mts, as well as a sporadical exposure of it in the areas of Hantenggri Peak and Kapulong at Quexiang.

Fossils

It yields abundant plant fossils, such as Czekanowskia rigida, Cladophlebis asiatica, Pityophyllum cf. nordenskioldi, Phenicopsis sp., Ginkgo huttoni.
